About Te Awamutu
Literally translated, Te Awamutu means 'the river cut short', marking the end of the navigable section of the Manga-o-hoi Stream. Te Awamutu is also known as the ‘rose town’, for it's many elaborate rose gardens in the centre of town.
History of Te Awamutu
Te Awamutu has a history stretching back to the fourteenth century, when Tainui landed at Kawhia and settled the area. It was home to the Otawhao Mission and St John's Church which was erected in the 1850's and still stands today.
